Reform_xm

Our last party for 2012 is tonight at Kitcheners Braamfontein. We're up at 7pm playing some laid back luke until we warm up and hit it hard at around 10ish to 4am with our usual brand of soul/funk/townshipjive/disco/dub and rarities.

As always, check out various REFORM mixes here for a taste:

REFORM! 3rd Birthday party

Images

Who would have thought that REFORM! Sound System would have made 3 years in this fickle Johannesburg clubland!

Charles and I never thought out little night would have become so popular (all relative of course - it's still pretty underground but it has grown considerably since it's humble Thursday night beginnings). We're happy with what it's become and where it's at. Given that we do this for fun in our spare time we think it's good going. We've created a place we think is cool to hang out playing music that is mostly played nowhere else.

Please join us on Saturday 3 Nov at Kitcheners in Braamfontein as we kick it three times.

We're on from 7pm (to catch the market bar crawling hipsters) and will playing some mid-tempo drinking music and will turn it up from about 9ish or whenever the floor dictates.

Check out my mixcloud page for some cool REFORM! mixes to stream or download. I'll be adding some new ones in the next few days.

I'll be phasing the blog out in the coming months. Please check out my new homepage and sign up or follow via RSS for updates. Check the Reform heading for the Facebook group link if you'd rather follow that way.

UNDERGROUND 2CD compilation is out!

My 4th CD compilation UNDERGROUND is finally available in music stores around SA! It's been a year in the making (only because it took time to track down the publishers of some of the more obscure tracks). I'm very happy with how it turned out. The sleeve is particularly magnificent!

2nd Draft done

It's been a slow road...so since over a year ago I've managed to complete the second draft of the story. I did this in a new program called SCRIVENER which I've found quite user friendly for comic scripts. I also wrote the first draft of a DJ course using a different SCRIVENER template and it worked out well.

To push myself to re-write the 2nd draft, I entered the SCRIPT FRENZY challenge and completed it!

Sf_winner_180x180
The actual comic is around 18 pages in now. Chris and Ben have been super busy on other stuff so progress has been slow. I'm hoping to release part 1 of around 25-30 pages by the end of the year. It will probably be a free PDF just to get it out. The future plan is to get a LTD print run going with some added stuff. I may even go the INDIE-GO-GO crowd funding route depending on the level of interest.

BWTF has spawned a CD compilation. It's called UNDERGROUND and is a 2CD set being released in Aug/Sep 2012 through EMI. The idea and tracklisting came from writing the story and all the music is era specific. More once it's released. I'll be planting (read hiding) some BWTF references.

My new homepage has more on the album.

Please follow BWTF progress by following this blog or my above wordpress site.

JUKEBOX - Best of HIGH FIVE RECORDS

422731_10150714180126206_59998

Sadly the run of HIGH FIVE parties come to end but they do so in superoverloadwildwater style!
On Saturday night, 15 of the DJs who've all had a hand in the previous parties (look, look, see what I did there...?) squeeze into about 7 1/2 hours of playing time giving each one a 30 minute slot to jam whatever HIGH FIVE moment they want.
Sad to see it go but have no doubt Ben & Ri will come up with some or other amazing concept soon!

It's one of those rare nights where I'm playing two parties. The first is a private function from 7pm - 2am giving me 30 mins to get to Kitcheners for my 2.30am power half-hour. Should be fun...

I've had the pleasure and priviledge of playing WIPEOUT, KICK OUT THE JAMS, SEPTEMBER and LOVE WILL TEAR US APART (all reported in previous posts)
I recorded the WIPEOUT mix on the night. Check it out below.

WIPEOUT MIX

Here is the story as told on Facebook:

Over the course of a year, High Five Records threw 12 parties, each one themed to a very different sub-genre of the wide wide world of rock & roll. Each party was presented as an imaginary compilation, the "tracklisting" of which, was the 5 DJs playing that night. Over the course of each night, 7 and a half hours of dancing were divided up by that month's "High Five".

On Saturday the 17th we'll be hosting "Jukebox - The Best of High Five Records!" a wrap-up event to celebrate the end of the series! Sonically, the night will span the full extent of all the genre's explored over all Hi5's 12 installments, from swing to surf, proto-punk to post-punk, 50ies soul to 80ies new wave to 90ies indie. The real surprise is, breaking away from our formula of 5 DJs in 7 and a half hours, we won't have a "High Five" , but rather a "High Fifteen"!!! Yes, we are being as ambitious and crazy that we think we can squeeze 15 DJs into 1 lineup and what's more we think it's gonna work out pretty damn well!

If you're wondering about the maths, we have 7 and a half hours from 8:30PM - 4AM, a total of 450 minutes. Divided by our 15 DJs, it leaves each DJ with a power set of 30 minutes. Whether they try fit 20 doo wop hits into that time, or would rather just play two epic disco jams for the whole set, that's totally up to them. Seeing what people do with a micro-set like this and the madness of giving the dancefloor a new selector every 30 minutes, we think this is gonna make for one of the most fun, crazy nights-out that Joburg has seen in ages!

March 10 party alert

Reformmarch2012

March is upon us and it's a few days before our party. The fact that it's already March is decidedly fucked...but there you go.

Last week, Jo from Past Experiences wrote a piece on their blog about a weekend in Braamfontein that included some kind
words about our party. We met Jo late last year at one of our nights where they were requesting Jackson5 (which we played) and
Barbra Streisand (which we didn't). Because my hearing is clinically shot, they kindly wrote their requests on their business cards.

Coincidentally, I discovered that I have their site as a recommended link on another of my blogs used for research on Johannesburg's history
for a script I'm working on (http://johannesburgscript.posterous.com) They conduct some well informed tours of the city and are worth checking out.

Feb 18 REFORM Sound System night on the outskirts of town

Braamfontein beckons once again as we prepare for our second REFORM Sound System of 2012.

Reformfeb2012

Kitcheners Cnr Juta & De Beer str Braamfontein R20 cover from 9pm -12pm (R30 after)

We play 6 decade spanning soul, funk, townshipjive, raregroove, girlgroups, nigeria70s, reggae, girlgroups, new wave, indie, swingjazz and other oddities

The best part for me (besides hitting it with Charles on the actual night) is scouring the net and my own collection looking for new stuff to play. I'll sit up for hours listening to 100s of tracks just to find one or two little unknown or underrated gems to add to the already substantial set of danceable favourites and obscurities.

Here are two recent finds:

Andrew Oldham Orchestra - The last time

This is where The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony comes from. Andrew Oldham Orchestra was a side project of the original Rolling Stones manager and 'The last time' was an orchestral version of a Jagger/Richard song. The Stones label own all the publishing of the Verve track. One can hear why...

Delmonas - Peter Gunn locomotion

Cover mash-up from 1984 in a rockabilly 60s girl group style from trio of one time Billy Childish backing singers.

HI 5 Post-Punk Party

The coolest party planners on the planet have put together a positively pucker post-punk party and invited me to play. Expect a set of late 70s & early 80s pearls covering the above mentioned plus new wave and pre-goth with a few current purveyors of the scene.

Kitcheners in Braamfontein Cnr De Beer & Juta str from 9pm R30 cover Sat 21 Jan

As a bonus, here is an ultra/super/rare new wave megamix bootleg from around 85. I remember hearing this at Heaven around 87 and had it on a tape. I recently acquired a near mint copy and did a high quality vinly rip as there are none on the net. It's about 14 mins long and 36MB at 320K.

WAVE MIX

The 12" had 3 other mixes on it namely WHITE MIX (Barry White mega mix), RIMINI MIX (Disco) and KID MIX (Hip-Hop)

1st REFORM Sound System party of 2012

Charles Leonard and I on again this Saturday 14 Jan at Kitcheners in Braamfontein from 9pm R20 cover and all that.

Here is the FB event

Thanks to all our supporters and readers out there!

From time to time I add a few music pieces to these posts. This is one of those times...I recently got hold of the re-issue CD of Rockabilly Psychos and the Garage Disease. It's a comp from the late 80s featuring some ols school alternative dancefloor classics (here in Johannesburg at any rate) like Trashmen's SURFIN BIRD (check out my own little re-edit below), Sonic's PSYCHO and Meteor's MY DADDY IS A VAMPIRE.

[[posterous-content:pid___0]]

Of interest was the Legendary Stardust Cowboy track PARALYSED. I've had this track on a mix tape since the late 90s. It's pure freakout on the scale of Birthday Party's SONNYS BURNING but 20 years earlier (Early 60s vs. early 80s) I guess this was the punk/underground music of the time and as a genre has gone onto influence countless bands throughout the decades. The Rhino box set NUGGETS is also a great place to get an overview of the garage scene in 60s & 70s. I've only managed to find two other LSC albums from the early 80s but none of the tracks match this.

[[posterous-content:pid___2]]

Another favourite of mine is the Hasil Adkins SHE SAID. Although I prefer the more coherent  Cramps version by far which I first heard at Le Club in 88. Hearing the orginal puts it into perspective. Haze (like Legendary) is a nutter who has also released an album full of songs about chickens. I've never seen it but love CHICKEN WALK which I picked up somewhere.

[[posterous-content:pid___3]]Other artists on the comp include The Novas CRUSHER (also covered by the Cramps), Link Wray, Guana Batz, The Gun Club and The Sting-Rays amongst others I've not heard of. It's also a great comp when looking for HALLOWEEN selections.

We play a whole lot of different music at Reform Sound System but the diversions very much depend on who is there and what is working on the night. Surfin Bird, the Crusher and Link Wray have been played a few times. The two above may get their turn soon.
