Tupperware Tombstone & Sticky Antlers gig

The brilliant Sticky Antlers are playing their final shows this month. Myself and Sassquach are DJ support at the Bohemian gig on Thu 26 Aug.

 

Out of the ashes comes Tupperware Tombstone. It's some of my favourite music at the moment. There will be abums on sale a with bonus DVD only available at the shows. Bring some extra cash as these are normally one-off handmade affairs.

Thu 12th Aug party and pre-party post

Don't know 'bout you but July seemed to drag on forever...

Finally though, it's time for another REFORM! party on Thu 12th Aug. Woo-hoo! Obligatory flyer attached.

 

I do apologise for still not posting that REFORM! DJ MIX as promised. It's sitting on a minidisc

that I'll only be able to transfer to MP3 next week. I don't have the required gear so when I'm in studio

next week to mix my first DJ compilation called INDIEBLEEP, I'll ask the guys to do it for me.

 

Here are two newly discovered tracks I plan to drop next week and forever after:

 

The Mgababa Queens - Maphuthi

 

This 1977 track comes off the brilliant NEXT STOP SOWETO compilation on STRUT. What caught me was the Pipettes/Go Team/CSS style chorus (to my ears anyway)

 

 

Vibrettes - Humpty bump pts 1&2

 

From 1973, this covers funk, girl group, rare groove and northern soul genres all at the same time. There is no info on the net I could easliy find excpet that it's been sampled by Qtip and Digital Underground. The original 7" is worth a few $$$

Fond this on a sort of okay VAMPISOUL compilation called HEY EVERYBODY...I GOT A NEW DANCE

We play this in various guises. Next to this version, my favourite is the instrumental version off the CALYPSOUL compilation. It's on that REFORM! DJ mix I've been trying to convert to MP3 from minidisc. Seems as though it was written by Bo Diddley. Most commercial version was by Dawn Penn in the 90's

 

DREAM BABY:

I've got a soft spot for 60s girl groups and similar sounding tracks. This is by Cherilyn and is actualy one of the first recordings

by the mostly awful CHER

While I work out how to transfer the REFORM! DJ mix to MP3 so I can post it, here are a couple of gems:

This is from the excellent Ghana Special on SOUND WAYS soon to be available in good music stores in all it's special packaging glory. Since all my 'official' teams are out of the world cup and since Ghana are the last African team left and since I was really impressed with their game against Australia in Rustenburg, I though this would be a relevant post

 

Snatch and the Poontangs - Hey shine 

 

Found this on a download compilation on eMusic by pure chance...checked it out becasue the name was cool! Turns out it's a filthy R&B/rock n roll tune that could've been sung by Pulp Fiction era Samuel L Jackson. Wiki says otherwise...

Snatch and the Poontangs is an album of sexually oriented blues songs released in 1969. The album features bandleader Johnny Otis on piano and drums, his son guitar player Shuggie Otis and vocalist Delmar "Mighty Mouth" Evans as The Hawk, Prince Wunnerful, and The Mouth, respectively.

More than half the songs on the album are based on well-known African-American folklore.

• "Hey Shine" tells the tale of the RMS Titanic, focusing on the legend that black boxing champion Jack Johnson (boxer) rescued all the black passengers.

 Now to track down the whole album.
